Webster, Texas is located in the middle of several unique area attractions. There’s the Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston Bay, Clear Lake, and also the NASA Space Center, all a stone’s throw from the city. Another interesting attraction exclusive to Webster itself is the Challenger 7 Memorial Park. The park was dedicated as a memorial to the seven astronauts that lost their lives in the Challenger 7 explosion on January 28, 1986.

The layout of the park is such that care providers can easily navigate the areas with their elderly clients who may have limited mobility. There’s no need to worry about sand, gravel, or other rough terrain. While there are a number of nature trails that aren’t paved, the majority of the 300 acres that comprise the park are completely handicapped accessible.

Some of the attractions located in the park are:
100 acre bird sanctuary
Three elevated boardwalks with observation decks for viewing wildlife its natural habitat along Clear Creek
Memorial plaque dedicated to the seven lives lost that bears the following inscription:

On January 28, 1986, the Space Shuttle Challenger, during Mission 51-L, exploded at 11:39 a.m., seventy three seconds after liftoff, killing all aboard.

Wooden and aluminum picnic tables, which are also handicapped accessible
Stocked fishing pond
Restrooms that are handicapped accessible
Public phones that are also handicapped accessible

The Challenger 7 Memorial Park can be a bustling place at times, but as with any other park, the weekday hours are the least busy. When planning a trip to The Challenger 7 Memorial Park, caregivers should keep some things in mind to ensure the comfort of their elderly clients. If not bringing a picnic lunch, snacks should be carried in case the client feels weak. Water should be offered at regular intervals so make sure to bring enough with you to the park. Midday hours are when the sun shines the hottest, so those should be avoided. Remember to use plenty of sunscreen, even if the sun isn’t very bright that day. UV rays are still harmful to the skin, especially in the elderly – regardless of the temperature outside. Be sure that the senior dresses according to the weather outside to safeguard against getting overheated. In the event of cool weather, a jacket is recommended.
