We all find ourselves going a little stir crazy from time to time, especially after spending extended periods stuck in the same routine. It’s easy for caregivers and their elderly clients to fall into a rut because of the monotony that caregiving entails. Just getting through the daily routines sometimes proves difficult for seniors and care providers alike. Certain things must be done each day in order to maintain our well-being. Taking medications, eating a balanced diet, finding time for exercise, attending to personal hygiene tasks, doctor appointments, and check ups can all get in the way of us finding any leisure time to enjoy. This kind of monotony can make caregivers begin to resent their jobs and lead to the elderly withdrawing from their surroundings.
One way to break up the monotony, of course, is to do things that you normally wouldn’t do. It could be something as simple as eating lunch on the porch instead of in the kitchen or it could involve planning a trip into town. For caregivers and their elderly clients in the League City, TX area, the historic Main Street commercial district is one place that they may go to take a break from their normal routine. The Main Street commercial district is has a quaint small town charm. The streets and sidewalks are lined with historic oak trees that provide much needed shade on hot days. Eleven of these trees have been registered to receive the Majestic Oak accreditation, due to their age and stately size. Caregivers and their clients can enjoy an afternoon of shopping in some of the district’s various retail and specialty shops. The majority of the shops are housed in historic buildings, which adds to the charm of the area. Antiques, books, gifts, clothing, and collectibles are just some of the things available for purchase.
Aside from the shops, the Main Street commercial district is also home to a number of eateries, tearooms, parks, and landmarks. The Schoolhouse Museum has artifacts on display that depict life in the area in the late nineteenth century. In addition to a one room school, a barn and icehouse are also part of the museum’s complex. Helen’s Garden is a wonderful green space and botanical garden also located within the district. The garden has blooming flowers year round, birdhouses, and a waterfall. There is also a bandstand – gazebo in the middle of the district that is the site of many activities, events, and festivals in the district throughout the year.
